Norfolk, Va. — Virginia Modeling and Simulation Partnership (VMSP) Chairman and Trideum Corporation Operations Manager, Matt Spruill, opened the MODSIM World Conference today with remarks on volunteer service in the modeling and simulation community.
“It’s a way to give back to the community that’s given me so much,” Spruill said. “That’s why I get involved and encourage others to do the same.”
Spruill is an expert in that area – having served as the Chairman of VMSP for the last seven years, the 2009 MODSIM Conference Chair and now the Interservice/ Industry Training, Simulation Education Conference Deputy Program Chair. The Deputy Program Chair role for 2019 ensures Spruill will be the Program Chair for 2020 and Conference Chair in 2022.
MODSIM World is a multi-disciplinary international modeling and simulation (M&S) event that provides a unique opportunity to learn about new M&S applications and practices across diverse domains.
“MODSIM is unique because it cuts across multiple disciplines and markets,” Spruill said. “At MODSIM, the newest technologies and lessons learned are explored to determine their implications and impacts to manufacturing, business, defense, education, and medical communities.”
Spruill noted that MODSIM World brings together the modeling and simulation community of practice. “If we didn’t learn from each other at events like this, we couldn’t adequately contribute to and increase the body of modeling and simulation knowledge,” he said.
MODSIM World began in 2007 by the Virginia Modeling and Simulation Partnership, a non-profit organization that draws membership from the M&S industry and community leaders in Norfolk and the entire Hampton Roads area.
MODSIM World 2019 key speakers and guests included U.S. Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), Capt. Timothy Hill, Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division Commanding Officer; Charles Southhall, Newport News Shipbuilding Vice President Engineering and Design; Col. Robert Epstein, Air Force Agency for Modeling and Simulation Commanding Officer; Dr. Sae Schatz, Advanced Distributed Learning Director; and Col. Lawrence Mullany, U.S. Army, Joint Staff Deputy Directorate for Joint Training, Environment Operations Division Chief.
